If you thought that there was only one kind of pepper for you to grow, then think again. In actual fact there are a number of different varieties that are wonderful to grow at home and they are all going to be wanting roughly the same kinds of conditions no matter which one it is that you select. However, it is also important for you to go ahead and spend time getting to know the different varieties that you could opt for simply because of the difference in yields as well as even the heights that they grow to. In this kind of thing, preparation is paramount.

1. Pepper Types.

First, we are going to look at different pepper types and there are several to contend with in this particular list.

  • Hot Peppers.

2. Peppers that Depend on the Period Gone and the Process of Collection.

Peppers also vary according to color and that is directly related to when they are picked and also the process that they have gone through to get to that stage. In general, there are four different varieties that we are going to look at although as you will see there are more colors out there.

  • Black Pepper.

Black pepper is something we are familiar with and it does grow on a vine and is known as peppercorns. It is small, and is ground up and used for seasoning. They are actually picked before they turn red although that variety is also out there on the market.

  • White Pepper.

White pepper is related to the ripe fruit seeds that are ground down and also used as a spice or seasoning. Alternatively, there are varieties of larger peppers that are grown that are white in color but they are seen as being rather unusual.

  • Green Pepper.

The green pepper is very well known and it is actually a pepper that has not fully matured and is not fully ripe. However, it can still turn color although the flavor is effectively stopped in its tracks.

  • Red Pepper.

The red pepper is the fully ripen variety that has evolved from green. It has the most intense flavor as it has been allowed to grow to that stage naturally.

Types of Hot Peppers.

There are a number of different types of hot peppers for you to consider trying. The most popular varieties and a bit more about them are listed below.

Anaheim.

This is seen as being relatively hot and they are also known asNew Mexico chilis. They grow to around 10 inches in length and will turn from green to red as they mature.

Ancho Poblano.

This is a mild Mexican pepper and it is actually one of the most popular types of peppers that are grown inMexico. It is mainly green in color and is often dried and used in recipes.

Ancho Tiburon.

This is a variety of Poblano although it is a darker green color. It has pretty much the same strength and is approximately the same size so there is very little difference between the two.

Bangkok.

The bangkok version is small and has a bit of a kick to it as this pepper will only grow to around three inches in length. You can use it either as green or red but it does not require too much of it to make a difference.

Caribbean Red Pepper.

This is regarded as being an extremely spicy version of the habanero and most people are aware of how hot that is. This is one pepper you need to be careful with or it will blow your mind.

Cascabella.

This pepper is usually eaten when it is yellow in color and it is known as having an amazing taste. It grows to around two inches in length and has a bit of heat to it without being too over the top.

Cayenne.

The Cayenne pepper is known for having a lot of heat and it is regarded as being one of the hottest peppers out there. It has become more popular around the world now.

Habanero Hot Pepper.

Even though it might not have the impact of itsCaribbean cousin, the Habanero pepper has a fearsome reputation. This is not one for the weak willed person to try eating.

Hungarian Wax.

This is a medium heat pepper and it is best to eat it when it is yellow in color. This is often regarded as being one of the best peppers for canning and pickling.

Jalapeno Peppers.

Jalapeno peppers have a real reputation for causing some discomfort as they are regarded as being extremely hot and are popular in Mexican dishes. However, you do need to handle with care and do not add too much.

Krimzon Lee.

This is a larger paprika style pepper that grows to around eight inches. It holds a lot of heat in it as well although it does have a slightly sweet and spicy taste.

Padron.

These are small and are fromSpain with a tendency for them to be green in color. They are seen as being quite mild.

Piccante Calabrese.

This is also known as the devil’s kiss which gives you an idea of what it is like to eat. It is small in size but is not small in what it can do.

Serrano Hot Rod.

This is seen as being hot and will grow to around three inches in size. It is usually dark green and even though it is not the hottest pepper out there it does pack a punch.

Pepperoncini.

This is a medium length pepper around three inches long and red in color. It is not the hottest out there but does provide a bit of a burn.

Thai Hot Pepper.

The Thai hot pepper is known as one of the hottest peppers that you can grow and as the name suggests it is commonly found in Thai cuisine where it packs a real punch. It is red or green in color with both being just as hot as the other.

Tabasco Chili Pepper.

This is of course known due to tabasco sauce and it is a pepper that is grown inMexico. It does of course mean that it is pretty hot and if you have experienced the sauce then you know what we are talking about.

Sweet & Spicy Peppers.

Shishito Mellow Star.

The Shishito Mellow Star is a Japanese snacking pepper that is widely used in the country. It is thin and is mild in its taste and it grows to roughly finger length.

Sweet Peppers.

Ace.

These are larger green fruits that do turn red as they mature. They are more used in areas where the growing season is shorter and bell peppers struggle to grow.

Bell.

The most widely used variety of pepper around the world. It is mild in heat but has a stronger taste and is available in a range of colors depending on when it is picked.

Carmen.

This is an elongated Italian pepper that is absolutely amazing when it is roasted. It has no real heat to it and is more about the flavor which comes out during the roasting.

Corno di Torro Giallo.

This is the favorite pepper inItaly with its long thinner shape which grows to eight inches. It is packed with flavor and is very easy to grow.

Corno do Torro Rosso.

This is similar to the above mentioned variety but whereas Giallo is in yellow this version is in red.

California Wonder.

This was often seen as the standard bell pepper and is available in various colors depending on maturity.

Chinese Giant Sweet Red.

This is twice the size of the normal bell pepper and as the name suggests it is sweet and red in color. However, the plants themselves are quite compact in size.

Color MixBell.

Once again, as the name suggests this is a bell pepper that comes in a variety of colors depending on maturity.

Cubanelle.

This is a Cuban pepper that is sweet and rich in flavor. It is quite small in size and will mature into a red color if allowed to ripen although it is often picked when green.

Emerald Giant.

This is a large pepper that can give a high yield in its growing season. The peppers are dark green but will eventually turn to red if you leave them to mature long enough.

Gourmet.

This is a compact and smaller pepper both in the fruit and plant size. It is a bright orange color when it is ripe and has a rich flavor.

Gypsy.

This variety produces an early crop of sweet tapered peppers that can also be grown in colder climates.

Jimmy Nardello.

This is another Italian pepper known for its thin skin making it perfect for frying. It has a rich flavor and turns from green to red.

King Arthur.

This is a sweet and crunchy pepper that takes longer to germinate and grow so look at this for being at the end of the growing season.

Lunchbox Mix.

This comes in three colors and are seen as small snacking peppers. They are sweet to the taste and have a lot of flavor but do not expect any heat from them.

Lady Bell Sweet Pepper.

This is a sweet and juicy pepper that packs a lot of flavor into its size. It goes from green to red and the more mature it is then the sweeter it becomes.

Marconi Red.

This Italian pepper matures after bell peppers so it fits in more to the end of the growing season. It is very sweet and is a 7 inch tapered pepper that is amazing for frying.

Mini Bell Blend.

This blend comes in bright colors, is small in stature, but is big in flavor.

Purple Bell.

This is sweet and has a dark purple color. They grow the same as normal bell peppers just it is the color that is different.

Pimiento.

This is also known as the cherry pepper and it is 4 inches long by 2 inches wide. It matures into a red color and is sweet to the taste.

Red Mercury.

This is a medium length fruit between 4 to 6 inches in length. It is mild in taste and matures to red from green.

Sweet Banana Pepper.

These peppers are banana in shape hence the name. It has a mild and tangy taste and is most commonly found in a yellow color although they do turn red if they ripen.

Sweet Sunrise.

This is a medium sized plant that is more commonly producing yellow or orange fruit. It matures early on and grows medium sized peppers that are packed full of flavor.

So, as you can see there are indeed various kinds of peppers both hot and sweet varieties that you are able to grow at home and what we strongly recommend is that you think carefully before you purchase any seeds or think about buying seedlings.
